Why Am I Not Losing Weight?

Image
Whether you’re new to low carb or a well-seasoned dieter, starting a low carb diet can be exciting. Watching the pounds drop that very first week or two can put you in a better frame of mind to keep going, but if you expect that weight loss to continue, you’ll soon be in for a surprise. For those who have used carbohydrate restriction before, the slow-down isn’t discouraging. For a newbie to the low carb way of eating, however, it can be confusing. Questions begin to build up: Am I following the diet wrong? Has my low carb diet stopped working? If I’m exercising and eating correctly, why am I not losing weight? How can I be in ketosis and not lose weight? What can I do to break my stall? When your weight loss slows to a crawl or you hit a wall, it’s common to want to know what’s happening. Although there’s no way to know for sure, there are several possibilities. Dehydration One of the main reasons you might not be losing weight is due to dehydration or electrolyte imbalances. How Important is Ketosis?

Image
How important is Ketosis to a Low Carb Diet? There is an awakening that’s beginning within the low-carb community. It’s an awakening to the realities of Ketosis, it’s importance in weight-loss success, and the rude awakening that we might have somehow deceived ourselves as to what Ketosis actually is and does. While the state of Ketosis is not necessary to achieve a healthy weight, it’s interplay with insulin resistance and fat metabolism is not always understood. When Dr. Atkins was young, he was one of those kids who could eat anything he wanted and not gain weight. In the early 1960s, however, he found himself with three chins looking 15 years older than he was. That was a critical turning point in his life. He had to face what he’d become: a fat man. Although he knew he needed to do something about his condition, like most of us, he was afraid of being hungry. He didn’t want to reduce his portion sizes and go on a low-calorie diet. He wanted magic. As a doctor, he knew that hunger ...

Is a Low-Carb Diet Sustainable for Life?

Image
I recently received a comment from a reader that suggested my lack of dieting success was probably due to my inability to stay with one particular low-carb diet plan long enough to reap results. The advice I received was to go on a low-carb, high-fat diet and give it six months or more to work before analyzing.  That was similar to the advice I received from the zero-carb folks a few years ago when despite the fact that I had gained about 20 pounds in the first three weeks and was experiencing abnormally high blood glucose levels, they told me to eat only beef, drink only water, and wait six months before reviewing the results. They didn't seem to care about the resurrected neuropathy. They were just sure that their way was the only way.  The problem with that type of advice is that it doesn't work for everyone.  Take Responsibility for Your Own Health Correcting metabolic issues isn't always as easy as lowering your carbohydrate level. For example, I'm juggling vertigo...

Why Does a Low Carb Diet Make You Feel Shaky?

It’s a myth that all overweight people have insulin resistance and/or metabolic syndrome. It’s also a myth that everyone’s insulin and blood glucose levels soar into the clouds when they eat carbohydrates. If you have normal blood glucose control, your body’s sensitivity to insulin will quickly take care of the small rise in glucose you get after you eat. In fact, typical folks never see a rise in blood sugar levels much above 120 mg/dl (6.6 mmol/L) – no matter how much starch and sugar they eat. The problem comes for those of us with an abnormal response to the carbohydrates we eat. Reasons for that vary, but taking the necessary steps to correct the problem can often make us feel ill. The Atkins’ Flu, Detoxing from Sugar, and Carbohydrate Withdrawal The first two weeks of a low carb diet can send the body into a tizzy. We’re restricting the body’s first-used fuel source, emptying out glycogen stores, dumping a lot of excess water, and coaxing our liver to begin breaking down stored b...
